Is Sephora overrated? Can a tagine be sad? What's at the bottom of the well? To these and other questions, you'll find the answer in Second Taste, the 2018 Book a Break Anthology. 27 stories on the theme of nourishment, available now for pre-order here at a reduced price until its official release on 28th September.
The stories in this anthology were selected from submissions to the Book a Break short story competition, which was judged by last year's winner, acclaimed short story and flash fiction writer, Sherry Morris. Below is an except from her preface.
What I found valuable in reading all these stories was the discovery that nourishment can take so many different forms. Each tale offered something worthy and touched on the nourishment theme in its own unique way. I couldn’t help but be impressed with the quality and inventiveness of the stories submitted. I appreciated and marvelled at each writer’s effort and approach to the theme. I think you will too.
Within these pages you’ll meet characters who find nourishment not only through food, but through travel, music, and nature. You’ll read many stories where nourishment (or lack of) from family and relationships is explored. In some stories it’s the protagonist who provides the nourishment rather than seeks it. It was a very difficult task selecting stories for the long list. Creating the shortlist from the banquet of stories on offer was agonising. I read and pondered over each story many times, wondering which to choose from such a tantalising smorgasbord.
The results are here now. In your hands. You’re reading the crème de la crème of the nourishment stories. They will make you laugh and cry and marvel at the infinite amount of ways writers’ words nourish us. I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I did.
So, reader, now that I’ve whet your appetite. Come to the table. Get comfortable. Bring your napkin, fork and knife. Dig in and savour these tales. You’ll come away sated, likely wanting to raise your glass to these writers and thank them for providing such a satisfying read. I know I did.

Sounds like a cool book, compiled for a worthy cause. We do tend to forget that nourishment can take so many forms.
Thank you, Damyanti. Yes, it’s a good collection of stories, worth reading in their own right – but contributing to the AMF adds another good reason;
